This is a very helpful book on thinking through how we go about re-enchanting our lives and culture. This gives much needed perspective and is another excellent book by Dr. Beck (whose blog is also very good).I really enjoyed it but the very end left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. Now that I've had a little distance from it to think, here's the main problem in Beck's conclusion (quotes are from the book):Beck labels "curated enchantments" as "a fatal, fundamental flaw," a clear mark of spirituality treated as products to choose from on a shelf in "our consumeristic age," where we "pick up and lay down at a whim" immanent (i.e., self-generated) enchantments based on our "whims and fancies."But that's not what I've seen people do. I've seen people who take faith very seriously explore available, historical disciplines and practices searching to fill their longing for God and healing from deep spiritual and religious hurts. "Curated" doesn't mean picked at a whim, it means chosen thoughtfully, being sensitive to the Voice of the Holy Spirit, leaning into that neglected core teaching of Judaism and Christianity that we would each be taught by God and have divine law inscribed in our hearts. We aren't called to robotically follow religious ritual, that is not the Way to enchantment. It is rather very much tied to much, serious spiritual and religious abuse. We are invited to grow in relationship to God, to explore ways to deepen our connection to the Divine.Put theologically, I think Beck overstates the divide between transcendence and immanence. Yahweh can only be understood holding those in dialectical tension (which yes, means understood not at all, that is part of the deal).I still highly recommend this book. It spurs much good reflection. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! This book explains why so many Evangelicals are reverting back to Catholicism. It explains why our kids are not persisting in the Faith. It explains why The Church, and the American people, are not thriving.Chapter 5 - “The Good Catastrophe” alone has changed my outlook on life. It turned me into a genuinely grateful person, looking for God’s grace around every corner. I have photocopied it and given it out to many people. I can’t imagine anyone not being moved by it.The chapter on Celtic Enchantments was another favorite. I learned so much about ancient Celtic Christianity, and what it can teach us today.I don’t give many 5 star ratings. If I could, I would give this 6, because it is SO informative and inspiring; and just SO well done.
